IFEA 7TH World Endodontic Congress August 22-25, 2007, Vancouver, Canada
7th World Endodontic Congress: August 22-25, 2007 Vancouver, Canada
  Pre-Congress Day (August 22, 2007)

The IFEA 7th World Endodontic Congress will include a Pre-Congress day featuring a Micro-Endodontics and Endo-Restorative 3-D lecture followed by a Hands-On Workshop that will provide dentists with the opportunity to learn first hand the techniques that were demonstrated during the 3-D lecture.

3-D LECTURE: MICRO-ENDODONTICS AND ENDO-RESTORATIVE FOR THE NEXT CENTURY
The first endodontic meeting in history to feature 3-D technology! The Operating Microscope ushers in new clinical possibilities, and this revolutionary lecture format allows the attendees to experience true radicular anatomy, biomimetic endodontic shaping, and extraordinary endrestorative possibilities that will finally bring real change in long term outcomes.

There is a plethora of new technologies in the field of endodontics, yet the failure rate remains high. The weak link is often endo-restorative failure. Additionally, the endodontic shapes have recently become much larger at the expense of strength of the tooth. Biomimetic shaping with direct microscope visualization is fundamentally different than blind, tactilly driven, arbitray round shaping. This will require new techniques, new instruments and enlightened philosophy.

This fast paced lecture, by virtue of 3-D projection, will share these many new building blocks in microscope enhanced dentistry including:

  • The evolution of the endo / endo-restorative continuum;
  • Delicate, microscope enhanced endodontic access;
  • The expanded role of ultrasonic in every day endodontics;
  • Shaping and restoring ovoid canal systems;
  • Identification and appropriate treatment of high risk endo-restorative cases;
  • Color and texture maps of dentin in calcified systems, the MB2 and Middle Mesial;
  • Esthetic possibilities in nonvital teeth; and
  • The Achilles heel of Endodontically treated teeth

PENTRON PENTRON CLINICAL TECHNOLOGIES - LUNCH SYMPOSIUM

Speaker: Dr. Joseph Maggio (United States)

Resilon was introduced over 3 years ago as an root canal filling system that has the potential to form a monoblock in the root canal and improve the seal compared to gutta-percha.

Presently Pubmed shows 64 published papers evaluating many aspects of the Resilon system. The vast majority of these papers support the original claim that it is as good as or better than gutta-percha systems. This talk will summarize the principles of the Resilon obturating system, the potential advantages of such a system and studies performed to date. In addition a new 3 year outcome study performed in private practice will be presented.

ProTaper Shaping and Cleaning Workshop

Speaker: Dr. C. Ruddle (United States)

This endodontic hands-on workshop is designed to move each clinician closer to their full potential. Participants will utilize a simple set of easy-to-use, progressively tapered ProTaper™ shaping files to prepare root canals for 3-D obturation. Clinicians will have the opportunity to confirm their preparation by fitting ProTaper™ matching gutta percha master cones into these fully-shaped root canals.

NOTE:  Dr. Ruddle’s Pre-Congress lecture is a prerequisite for this hands-on workshop and participants must bring 2-3 extracted teeth which have been previously accessed.

NOBEL BIOCARE WORKSHOP

To Extract or Not to Extract?

Complete Rehabilitation of the Single Extraction Site with Implants.

Speaker: Dr. Tassos Irinakis

We are commonly faced with the dilemma between a conservative approach and an assertive response when evaluating a compromised or failing tooth.  Should we proceed with complicated Endo therapy and take our chances or should we consider extraction and restorative rehabilitation with and implant?

This workshop will focus on this dilemma and provide insight in order for the clinician to respond appropriately to such cases with a successful diagnosis and treatment plan.

Key factors will be discussed on when to proceed with socket preservation (and bone grafting & delayed implant placement and when to proceed with immediate implant placement in fresh extraction sites.  On one hand, the practitioner c an extract the tooth and fill the socket with grafting material to preserve the architecture of the socket and proceed with delayed implant placement at a later time.  On the other hand, it may be prudent and desirable to immediately place an implant into a fresh extraction socket at the time of tooth removal, thus saving the patient money and time.

The advantages and challenges of each procedure will be discussed in detail, along with tips to allow easier descision making.  Esthetic considerations are always a crucial determining factor and helpful guideline will be offered.

The regenerative armamentarium, surgical know-how & clinical guidelines will be illustrated with a plethora of audiovisual aids.  Different techniques will be demonstrated with photos and movies, allowing the participants to practice these techniques themselves on the Hands-On part of this workshop.

During the Hands-On session, participants will practice atraumatic extraction of teeth with the most advanced methods and instruments.  Implant will be placed into these fresh sockets under the guidelines offered during this course.  This workshop will allow you to immediately implement this treatment in your practice with confidence and success!

Welcome to the world of restoring a beautiful smile via the path of immediate implants!

HANDS-ON WORKSHOP ON NON-SURGICAL AND SURGICAL ENDODONTICS

Speakers:
Dr. Leslie Ang (Singapore)
Consultant Endodontist
National Dental Centre, Singapore

Dr. Bertrand Khayat (France)
Private Practice limited to Endodontics, Paris-France

This hands-on workshop aims to discuss the modern principles and treatment strategies to solve clinical problems faced by many Endodontists during treatment. Participants taking the hands-on workshop in will go through skills training exercises to build up confidence  in treating complications using the microendodontic and microsurgical approach.  At the conclusion of the course, participants will learn the most current clinical techniques and solutions derived from the evidence based approach. They will have the opportunity to use the technologically advanced and newly designed Titanium Niobium ultrasonic tips with microsurgical instruments under microscopes that incorporate the latest technology.

The program outline:

Learning objectives in molar root canal treatment:

  1. Find and instrument calcified canals with greater precision
  2. Bypass ledges and treat the severely curved root canal
  3. Understand why the technologically advanced Titanium Niobium ultrasonic tips are superior to regular titanium or steel tips
  4. Advanced designs in Niobium Titanium ultrasonic tips: How to use them effectively
  5. Advances in the technology of the Surgical Operating Microscope

Problems and Solutions in Endodontic Retreatment:

  1. Learn to decide when to remove a post and when to do surgery. How to remove metal or fiber posts safely.
  2. Remove tightly bound thermafil carriers, silver points or obstructions in root canals
  3. Use the latest Niobium Titanium ultrasonic instruments  to remove separated instruments around curves in root canals or in the apical one-thirds of canals
  4. Steps to deal with the dilemma of perforations and procedural errors

Learning objectives in Endodontic Microsurgery:

  1. Choosing between Retreatment or Microsurgery
  2. Manage complications  in endodontic microsurgery: Sinus perforations, mental nerve involvement, palatal microsurgery, hemorrhage & mandibular second molar microsurgery
  3. Endodontic Microsurgery under local and general anesthesia
